Aldgate was originally a protective gate of north London which dates back to medieval times. In 1854 the surrounding ward suffered the death of many of its occupants to Cholera. The cause was only later found to be the central water pump whose source had been contaminated by waters flowing from local graveyards. This pump has since been rebuilt and nicknamed “The Pump of Death”
