The Little Leaf

I’m a little leaf at the top of a tree.

I dance in the wind as if I am free.

I see all the birds flying high in the sky.

If only my trees branches reached so high.

Beside me my tree sends out little buds.

As its roots grow down further below in the mud.

I’m a little leaf at the top of the tree.

Surrounded by friends, but oh woe is me.

I want to be free up off in the air.

I’ll dance in the clouds without ever a care.

The bees soon visit, how I envy them.

Free up on wings, not attached by a stem.

I see the flower petals live out my dream.

As they are pulled off and away in the air stream.

I’m a little leaf at the top of the tree.

I watch the birds take the berries but never me.

The wind has picked up and the sun barely shows.

The tree speaks of colours and something called snow.

We turn red and pink with splashes of yellow.

The wind is loud, it whips, it bellows.

I’m a little leaf at the top of the tree.

I dance in the wind, SNAP, I am free!

I twist, I turn, I loop the loop.

I cheer, I glee, I let out a whoop!

I see my friends still attached to the tree.

Oh how they must be so jealous of me.

The wind has now slowed and now I do fall.

I am still free so I don’t care much at all.

I’m a little leaf above all the trees.

I call back the wind, please please please.

My call is unanswered and I fall to the floor.

Will the wind ever reach me here, I am not sure.

Along crawls a worm and looks down at me.

“How was the view from the top of that beautiful tree?

Were the bees kind, the flowers charming?

Did the birds sing, their plumage appealing?

For I’m a little worm down on the ground.

Up high in the tree is where I’d like to be found.”
