As I sat there on the sofa, fingers digging into the armrest, I started to remember the painful memories of yesterday in a rhythmic cycle that seemed like a record on repeat—the song that everyone hates. There I was in a classroom, void of any living, breathing people, about to make a mistake that would eventually catch up with me. It was the third period, and I was supposed to be in my history class learning about the Agricultural Revolution, but we all know that’s just a fancier way to get people to sleep without trying.
It had been days or even weeks since our school had seen any “action” or spice to illuminate the seemingly dim halls, so it felt like the best time to spice things up a bit. I was grinning from ear to ear as I carefully set down the mouse with military precision, constantly checking over my shoulder as if I had just committed a crime.
“Now run, my pretty,” I mumbled, cackling like a hyena. If only I had known that this would end up being one of the worst decisions of my entire life.
After carefully looking up and down the hallway, making sure no one saw me, I ran out of there in the direction of my history class.
“Naomi, you're late,” my history teacher said sternly as I made my way inside, giving me that “don’t let it happen again” look that seemed to pierce right through my soul.
“Okay sir, I’ll try not to let it happen again,” I mumbled softly as I skillfully navigated past students sitting in rows organized with precision. I took a seat near the window, where the cool air felt refreshing against my skin.
Two minutes later:
“Attention students! Attention students!” the principal announced through the intercom in a worrisome tone. “There appears to be a rodent located on campus that is causing issues for the canteen staff and other members of the faculty. We ask that all students evacuate the building immediately.”
Then the low hum of the intercom disappeared. The entire class went silent. Some were in a frenzy over the fact that there was a disgusting rodent on campus, while others were confused about what had happened. But one question cut through the confusion: Who was bold enough to do it?
My heart dropped to my stomach as we slowly evacuated the building in single-file lines. Outside, I could smell the toxic rodent repellent of the pest control officers, who marched into the building like soldiers going to war.
The principal questioned us one by one to figure out who was responsible. Eventually, they found out it was me, and I was given three days of detention. After that experience, I never tried to pull a stunt like that again.
