There was a boy who liked me more than I realized. His name was Daniel.
At first, I didn't think much about him. He was kind, funny, and always found a way to make me smile. Whenever I walked past him at school, he would greet me with a big smile, and sometimes he would try to start a conversation.
One day, Daniel finally told me how he felt about me.
I wasn't expecting it at all.
He stood in front of me, looking nervous, and told me that he liked me. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. I liked talking to him, but I didn't feel the same way.
So, I rejected him.
I tried to be polite because I didn't want to hurt his feelings. I told him that I was sorry, but I didn't see him that way.
He nodded and said he understood.
After that day, things became a little different.
Daniel stopped trying to talk to me as much. He didn't wait for me after class anymore, and the messages I used to receive from him slowly stopped.
At first, I thought I would be happy about it. After all, I had gotten exactly what I wanted.
But somehow, I wasn't.
I started noticing his absence.
I missed the random jokes. I missed seeing his smile whenever I walked into the classroom. Most of all, I started wondering if I had been too harsh.
One afternoon, I saw him laughing with his friends. He looked completely fine without me.
For some reason, that made me feel strange.
I realized something important that day: rejecting someone doesn't make them a bad person, and saying no doesn't make me a bad person either. Sometimes, two people can care about each other but simply not feel the same way.
I couldn't force myself to like Daniel just because he liked me.
And I couldn't expect him to wait for me forever.
Looking back, I don't regret being honest. I only wish I had understood sooner that someone's feelings are something to treat with kindness, even when you can't return them.
Daniel taught me a lesson without even knowing it.
Sometimes, the people we reject aren't meant to become part of our story in the way we imagined.
Sometimes, they're simply there to teach us something.
And Daniel?
He was the boy I rejected.
But he was also the boy who taught me that honesty and kindness should always go together.
