Ode To Seaside Piers

Viewed from nature's sandy scenes
Those pegged out, sea-stumped wooden beams
Topped by domes of garish greens
Housed candy flossy fruit machines.
..
Trod boarded slats and feared the deep
To risk our buy of trinkets cheap
Ate toffee apples on a stick
The hats we wore said 'kiss me quick'.
..
Found sherbet sweets and punching balls
And wide-eyed fortune teller's stalls
Automatons that laughed and rocked
Commanded by purse pennies dropped.
..
The skies alive with gull-winged caws
As bingo players checked their scores
The dodgem cars flashed sparks from beams
Your money's lost on prize machines.
..
As tide-washed sea soup crashed to shore
Excited children squealed for more.
We posted cards: 'Wish you were here'.
Ah, memories of the seaside pier!
