Lift

Listen to Lift
Checking audio availability…
Harsha returns home after his evening jog.
He is sweaty but relaxed. His headphones are on, music playing as he walks through the apartment lobby. He checks his smartwatch, looks satisfied with his workout, and heads toward the elevator.
The elevator arrives with a soft DING.
The doors open.
Harsha steps inside.
He presses 19—his floor.
The doors close.
The elevator begins moving upward.
Harsha is completely at ease. He listens to his music, occasionally nodding to the beat. The floor numbers change one after another.
15... 16... 17... 18... 19.
The elevator stops.
DING.
Harsha waits for the doors to open.
Nothing happens.
He continues listening to his music for a moment, assuming there is a slight delay.
Nothing.
He looks at the doors.
Still nothing.
Casually, he presses the DOOR OPEN button.
Nothing happens.
He presses it again.
Nothing.
He removes one side of his headphones and looks at the button.
He presses it once more.
Still nothing.
A slight expression of confusion crosses his face.
He presses 18.
The elevator starts moving.
Harsha relaxes slightly.
Perhaps the lift has simply malfunctioned at the 19th floor.
The elevator stops at 18.
DING.
The doors remain closed.
His expression changes.
He presses 17.
The elevator moves.
Stops.
The doors don’t open.
Now he is irritated.
He removes his headphones completely.
The music disappears.
For the first time, he notices the silence inside the elevator—the faint hum of the machinery, the sound of his own breathing.
He presses the door-open button repeatedly.
Nothing.
He presses another floor.
The elevator moves.
Stops.
Again, the doors remain closed.
Harsha’s irritation turns into frustration.
He tries the emergency button.
Nothing.
He presses it again.
Still nothing.
He checks his phone.
No signal.
He looks at the elevator panel.
He starts pressing different floors.
10.
The elevator moves.
Stops.
No doors.
5.
Moves.
Stops.
No doors.
GROUND and to Floor 19
Moves.
Stops.
Still nothing.
Harsha begins to realize that something is seriously wrong.
He knocks on the elevator doors.
Once.
Twice.
Then harder.
He waits.
Nothing.
He calls out.
No response.
He knocks again.
Still nothing.
The confined space begins to feel smaller.
His breathing becomes heavier.
He starts pacing inside the elevator.
Back and forth.
He tries to stay calm.
Then frustration turns into anger.
He slams the control panel.
He presses every button.
Nothing.
He pounds on the doors.
He kicks them.
The metallic impact echoes through the elevator.
He hits the emergency button repeatedly.
Nothing.
No alarm.
No voice.
No help.
Harsha finally loses control.
He punches the wall.
He immediately grabs his hand in pain.
He stands there, breathing heavily.
Then everything becomes quiet again.
Too quiet.
Harsha slowly looks toward the floor display.
Something has changed.
The elevator is moving.
Down.
He hasn’t pressed anything.
The display changes.
19...
18...
17...
Harsha stares at it.
He rushes toward the panel.
He presses a button.
Nothing.
Another.
Nothing.
The emergency button.
Nothing.
The elevator continues downward.
Slowly at first.
Harsha’s breathing becomes faster.
The floor numbers continue falling.
16... 15... 14...
Suddenly, the elevator accelerates.
Harsha grabs the handrail.
The numbers begin changing faster.
13... 12... 10... 8...
The elevator is now moving far too fast.
The walls begin to shake.
The lights flicker.
A deep metallic roar fills the cabin.
Harsha is terrified.
He desperately tries to stop the elevator.
He pounds on the doors.
He screams.
But there is nothing he can do.
The elevator accelerates even further.
The floor display becomes a blur.
Harsha grips the handrail with both hands.
His entire body shakes.
His breathing becomes frantic.
He realizes he may be about to die.
He screams at the top of his lungs.
Then—
SUDDEN SILENCE.
Everything disappears.
The screen goes completely black.
No music.
No mechanical sound.
No breathing.
Nothing.
We remain in darkness.
For a moment, there is no indication of what happened.
Then—
A faint line of light appears.
Slowly, it becomes wider.
We realize we are seeing through Harsha’s eyes.
His eyelids are opening.
The image is blurred.
Above him is a ceiling fan.
It rotates slowly.
The room gradually comes into focus.
Harsha is lying on his bed.
He is drenched in sweat.
His chest rises and falls rapidly.
He stares at the ceiling, disoriented.
Then—
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The sudden alarm makes him jerk violently.
He reaches for the clock and switches it off.
The digital display reads:
4:30 AM.
Harsha sits silently on the bed.
He wipes the sweat from his face.
He looks around his bedroom.
Everything is normal.
It was a nightmare.
He takes a deep breath.
Slowly, he calms down.
He gets out of bed.
He washes his face.
Changes into his jogging clothes.
Ties his shoes.
Puts on his headphones.
Picks up his keys.
He leaves the apartment and locks the door behind him.
He walks toward the elevator lobby.
It is still dark outside.
The apartment corridor is completely empty.
Harsha approaches the lift.
He stops.
He looks at the elevator doors.
Something about them makes him hesitate.
The nightmare flashes through his mind.
The closed doors.
The buttons.
The falling numbers.
The terrifying descent.
He looks at the elevator call button.
His finger slowly moves toward it.
He stops.
Looks at the doors again.
A moment of hesitation.
He knows he needs to take the lift.
But something inside him doesn’t want to.
His finger moves closer to the button.
Closer.
Just before he touches it
