HONEY'S BIG ADVENTURE
A Short Play in One Act
CHARACTERS:
HONEY – A small, curious mouse.
MAMA MOUSE – Honey’s caring mother.
PAPA MOUSE – Honey’s calm father.
BARNABY – A wise old squirrel.
SCENE 1: THE MOUSEHOLE
The play opens in a cozy, cluttered mousehole. There’s a tiny table made from a flattened bottle cap, chairs crafted from acorn caps, and a small bed nestled into a discarded slipper. Dried berry seeds are stored neatly in a thimble on a tiny shelf. MAMA MOUSE is tidying, PAPA MOUSE is reading a very small newspaper. HONEY is playing with a shiny button.
MAMA MOUSE: Honey, dear, remember what Papa and I said about staying close to the nest. The outside world is full of big, noisy things.
HONEY: (Without looking up, pushing the button with her nose) Yes, Mama. But what if there are even shinier buttons out there? Or... cheese crumbs bigger than my head?
PAPA MOUSE: (Lowering his paper) Curiosity is a good thing, Honey, but safety comes first. We have plenty of crumbs right here.
Honey sighs dramatically. She glances towards a small crack in the wall, sunlight peeking through. Her eyes squint as she tries to see something.
HONEY: (Gasps softly) Oh my goodness! Look! Through the crack! It's enormous! The biggest, crumbliest cracker in the whole wide world! It is practically glowing!
MAMA MOUSE: (Without looking up) That is just the sunlight, dear. And probably a leaf.
HONEY: (Shaking her head vigorously) No, Mama! It is too big for a leaf! It is definitely a cracker. And it looks so tasty!
Later that day. Mama and Papa Mouse are busy. Honey quietly slips towards the crack. She peeks out, her eyes wide with wonder at the sight of a shimmering, crinkled PLASTIC BAG caught on a twig outside. To her, it looks like a giant, glistening piece of food. She then slips completely out.
MAMA MOUSE: (Calling out) Honey, could you help me with these berry seeds? Honey?
Mama and Papa Mouse look around the mousehole. Their expressions turn to worry.
PAPA MOUSE: She's not here! Oh, Honey...
SCENE 2: THE GREAT OUTSIDE
The sounds of birds chirping and distant rumbling. Honey is scampering around, overwhelmed by the size of everything. She scurries towards the shimmering object.
HONEY: (Excited) Here it is! The super-cracker!
She pounces on the PLASTIC BAG, trying to take a bite. Her teeth just slide off the smooth surface. It makes a crinkly noise.
HONEY: (Disappointed) Huh? It is… it’s not a cracker at all! It’s just… shiny air! And it makes a funny noise!
She looks around. The familiar crack in the wall is nowhere in sight. She starts to feel a prickle of fear.
HONEY: Uh oh. Where did my door go? Mama? Papa?
Back in the mousehole. Mama Mouse is pacing. Papa Mouse is looking out the crack.
MAMA MOUSE: It is getting dark! What if she’s… what if she's lost forever? My poor little Honey!
SCENE 3: AN UNEXPECTED GUIDE
Honey is huddled under a leaf. BARNABY THE SQUIRREL appears, carrying an acorn.
BARNABY: Well, well, what is a little mouse doing out here all alone at this hour? Lost your way, little one?
HONEY: (Sniffling) Yes, sir. I went exploring for what I thought was the biggest cracker ever, but it was just a crinkly, shiny bag. Now I can't find my way home. My parents will be so sad.
BARNABY: (Chuckles kindly) Ah, the call of adventure. It's a strong one, but sometimes what looks like a feast is just… litter. Tell old Barnaby, where do you live? We squirrels have a knack for remembering nooks and crannies.
Honey describes her mousehole. Barnaby nods.
BARNABY: Follow me, little Honey. I know just the place.
SCENE 4: REUNION
Back at the mousehole. Mama and Papa Mouse are sitting sadly.
MAMA MOUSE: I just want her to be safe.
Suddenly, tiny footsteps are heard.
HONEY: Mama! Papa! I am home!
Honey bursts in, followed by Barnaby.
MAMA MOUSE: Honey! Oh, my little Honey!
PAPA MOUSE: We were so worried! Thank you, kind sir! How can we ever repay you?
BARNABY: No need! Just glad to see a family reunited. Safe journeys, little ones!
Barnaby disappears.
HONEY: I'm so sorry, Mama, Papa. I won't ever wander off again. It is much better here with you. And our crumbs are perfect!
MAMA MOUSE: We love you, Honey. This little nest, with our cozy slipper bed and our thimble full of seeds, is the best place in the world.
