I lay here in the grass and listen out for mum,
the leaves are rustling in the wind and bees fly with a hum.
I watch the flowers bloom around me and face towards the sun,
they sway in the breeze so happily while I resist the urge to run.
“Stay here darling” mum did say as she nuzzled at my head,
“Don’t move, don’t bleat, not a sound or else you’ll end up dead.”
Her words keep me frozen here among the buds and bloom,
I hear the danger close to me I hope she gets back soon.
The crows fly out of the grass to safety in the sky,
I dare not move, I dare not breathe , I dare not blink an eye.
The grass is rustling louder and the bees have flown away,
I lay here frozen on the ground as the flowers bob and sway.
I hear the danger panting and sniffing on the ground,
I think this must be it, until I hear a triumphant sound.
It’s mum and she’s running, her feet beat the mud
She attacks the danger with her hooves, “Thud, thud, thud!”
Up I bounce and off we run together once again,
We disappear into the woods only the buds and bloom remain.
