The house was never loud.

Even when people spoke, it felt quiet.

Tunde noticed this when he was ten years old, sitting at the dining table, watching his father eat without looking up. The spoon touched the plate. Food disappeared. Water was poured.

But no one said anything.

His mother moved carefully, like noise itself was something dangerous. Chairs were pulled slowly. Doors were closed gently. Even laughter—when it happened—ended too quickly, like it didn’t belong.

Tunde didn’t understand it then.

He only felt it.

A kind of heaviness in the air, like something was always about to be said… but never was.

Years passed.

Tunde learned to live the same way.

At school, he wasn’t the loudest, but he wasn’t invisible either. He answered questions. He smiled when needed. He made a few friends.

But he never told anyone what home felt like.

Because how do you explain silence?

One evening, when he was fifteen, the power went out.

Darkness filled the house, thick and sudden.

His mother lit a candle and placed it on the table. The small flame flickered, casting shadows that moved along the walls.

His father was already sitting.

Waiting.

Tunde sat too.

For a long time, no one spoke.

Just the quiet.

Just the flame.

Just the feeling that something was pressing against all of them.

Then, unexpectedly, his father said,

“You should focus on your exams.”

Tunde blinked.

It wasn’t what he expected.

It wasn’t what he needed.

But it was something.

“Yes, sir,” he replied.

And the silence returned.

That night, Tunde lay awake.

Listening.

Not to sounds—but to the absence of them.

And for the first time, he realized something:

Silence wasn’t empty.

It was full.

Full of things people didn’t say.

Full of things they were afraid to feel.

The next day at school, his teacher asked a simple question:

“What is communication?”

Hands went up. Answers came quickly.

“Talking.”

“Expressing ideas.”

“Sharing information.”

Tunde didn’t raise his hand.

But in his mind, he answered differently.

Communication is what happens when silence breaks.

Weeks later, something unusual happened.

His father came home early.

He looked tired.

Not the usual tired from work—but something deeper.

He sat down heavily and removed his shoes slowly.

Tunde watched him.

Something inside him shifted.

Before he could stop himself, he spoke.

“Are you okay?”

The words felt strange in his mouth. Heavy. Risky.

His father looked up.

Surprised.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then his father said,

“I’m fine.”

Automatic. Quick.

Like always.

Tunde almost nodded and let it go.

Almost.

But something pushed him.

“No,” he said softly. “You’re not.”

The room changed.

Not loudly. Not suddenly.

But enough.

His father stared at him, as if seeing him for the first time.

And then…

He exhaled.

A long, quiet breath.

And something inside that silence cracked.

“I lost a contract today,” his father said.

His voice was low. Unsteady.

“I thought… I thought it would fix things.”

Tunde didn’t know what “things” meant.

But he understood enough.

He nodded.

And this time…

The silence that followed wasn’t heavy.

It was open.

That night, they talked.

Not perfectly.

Not easily.

But honestly.

His mother joined them, slowly, carefully, like she wasn’t sure this was real.

But she stayed.

And for the first time in years, the house felt different.

Still quiet.

But no longer empty.

Tunde realized something then:

Silence can protect you.

But it can also trap you.

And sometimes…

The bravest thing you can do
is speak first.
