Everyone at school knew zuriiy as the girl who always smiled.
She smiled when people made jokes she didn't understand.
She smiled when teachers called on her.
She even smiled when she wanted to cry.
No one knew the loudest thing about Lena wasn't her voice.
It was her thoughts.
They never stopped.
"Zuriiy , are you listening?" her best friend ,Meena , laughed, snapping her fingers.
Zuriiy blinked.
"Oh! Sorry... what were you saying?"
"I said we're still hanging out after school."
"Oh... yeah. Of course."
But inside her head...
Why did she snap her fingers? Was she annoyed? Did I ignore her too much? Maybe she thinks I'm a bad friend. i should have payed more attention
By lunchtime, Meena seemed quieter than usual.
She's upset.
Zuriiy heart sank.
It's because of me.
By the end of the day, Meena left school without saying goodbye.
That night, Zuriiy stared at her phone.
She typed:
"I'm sorry if I did something wrong."
Deleted it.
Typed again.
"Are you mad at me?"
Deleted it.
Finally...
"I'm really sorry."
She hit send.
Three hours passed.
No reply.
Her mind exploded into a thousand voices.
She's done with you.
You always ruin everything.
Remember when you interrupted her last week?
That's when she started pulling away.
She cried herself to sleep.
The next morning Meena rushed over.
"Zuriiy! I'm so sorry I didn't answer. My grandma was taken to the hospital last night."
Zuriiy froze.
"Oh..."
The guilt she had carried all night...
...had never belonged to her.
But that was how life always felt.
When her parents argued downstairs...
"This house is a mess!" " why is there still stuff in this living room!" her dad shouted.
Zurriy sat against her bedroom door, knees pulled to her chest.
If I got better grades...
If I cleaned my room more...
If I wasn't such a burden...
if I just listen more...
if I had more patience...
Maybe they wouldn't fight.
She pressed her hands over her ears.
"I'll do better," she whispered to herself.
No one had even blamed her.
Yet somehow...
She had blamed herself anyway.
Weeks later, Zuriiy started talking to a boy named Zeek.
He made her laugh.
He remembered little things she told him.
For once...
Her mind became quiet.
Until one Friday.
His replies became shorter.
"Okay."
"Cool."
"Maybe later."
"k."
"idk."
Zuriiy stared at the screen.
He's bored of me.
I text too much.
I want to much of him.
I'm trying to hard.
Maybe I sounded annoying.
She reread every conversation they'd ever had.
Every joke.
Every emoji.
Every period at the end of a sentence.
She even apologized.
"I'm sorry if I've been too much."
Noah called immediately.
"Zuriiy... what?"
"I know you're pulling away."
"What are you talking about?"
"You've barely talked to me today."
There was silence.
Then Zeek sighed.
"My dog died this morning."
Everything inside Zuriiy stopped.
"Oh..."
"I wasn't ignoring you."
"I just... couldn't talk."
Zuriiy closed her eyes.
Again.
She had written herself into someone else's story.
she started thinking that she is making everything worse with spamming people and trying to talk all the time and maybe there making stuff up to not talk to her.
One rainy afternoon, Zuriiy visited her grandmother, Lois .
Lois was the kind of woman who noticed things without asking.
"You've been carrying the world again."
Zuriiy looked away.
"I just ruin things."
Lois smiled sadly.
"Who told you that?"
"No one."
"Then why do you believe it?"
Zuriiy couldn't answer.
Lois poured two cups of tea.
"When I was your age," she said softly, "I thought every storm was my fault too."
"You did?"
Lois nodded.
"Then one day your great-grandfather told me something I'll never forget."
She reached across the table and squeezed Zuriiy's hand.
"Just because you're standing in the rain doesn't mean you made the clouds."
Zuriiy felt tears fill her eyes.
She had never thought about it that way.
she was always used to carrying the weight of everyone else's problem.
Still...
Healing wasn't magic.
The thoughts kept coming.
Someone walked past without saying hello.
They hate you.
A friend canceled plans.
You're not important.
Her brother slammed his bedroom door.
He's angry because of you.
The thoughts were fast.
Cruel.
Convincing.
But now...
Another voice had begun to grow.
It sounded like Lois.
"You didn't make the clouds."
The first voice shouted louder.
"This is your fault."
" it's all because of you."
The second answered quietly.
"Or maybe... it isn't."
Months passed.
Zuriiy still overthought.
She probably always would.
But she stopped apologizing for things she hadn't done.
She stopped assuming silence meant rejection.
She learned that people could be sad without being angry at her.
That families could struggle without her causing it.
That friendships could change without someone being the villain.
One evening, she stood in front of her bedroom mirror.
The girl staring back looked the same.
Same green eyes.
Same messy blondish red hair.
Same freckles across her nose.
But something had changed.
For the first time in years, she smiled...
...not because she was pretending everything was okay—
but because she was finally beginning to believe that not every broken thing was hers to fix.
And in the quiet that followed, her thoughts didn't disappear.
They simply made room for something stronger.
Hope.
