My First Breakup

I still remember the day I realized that my relationship with Peculiar was changing. It didn't happen all at once. There wasn't one big argument or one terrible thing that happened. It was little things that slowly started making me feel like something wasn't right.
When Peculiar and I first started dating, everything felt exciting. I looked forward to seeing his messages on my phone, and whenever his name appeared on my screen, I couldn't help but smile. We could talk about random things for hours, laugh over silly jokes, and make each other feel special. At that time, I never imagined that one day I would be sitting alone, wondering if our relationship was falling apart.
One afternoon, I picked up my phone and sent him a message.
“Hey, Peculiar. How are you?”
I waited.
A few minutes passed, but there was no reply. I put my phone down and tried to continue what I was doing. A little while later, I picked it up again and checked.
Nothing.
I told myself not to worry. Maybe he was busy. Maybe his phone was with someone else. Maybe he would reply later.
So I waited.
Hours went by.
Eventually, I sent another message. “Are you okay? You haven't been replying to me.”
I stared at the screen after sending it. I kept hoping I would see the little notification that meant he had replied. But my phone stayed silent.
I started asking myself questions I didn't really want the answers to. Did I do something wrong? Is he angry with me? Does he still care about me?
I didn't want to assume the worst, so I tried to make things work. I talked to him whenever I could. I tried being patient. I tried understanding him, even when I didn't understand why he was becoming so distant. I kept telling myself that maybe things would go back to how they used to be.
But they didn't.
The more I tried, the more tired I became. Sometimes I would look at our old conversations and remember how happy I used to feel. I missed the way we used to talk. I missed feeling like I mattered to him.
One night, I sat on my bed with my phone in my hand. I opened our chat and looked at the last message I had sent. There was still no reply.
For a moment, I wanted to send another message. I wanted to ask him what was wrong. I wanted to fix everything.
But then I stopped.
I realized I had been trying to carry the relationship by myself.
A relationship was supposed to be something that both people worked on. I couldn't keep forcing things to work when I was the only one trying.
That realization hurt more than I expected.
I still cared about Peculiar. That was the hardest part. If I had stopped caring, breaking up would have been easy. But I hadn't stopped caring. I just knew that I couldn't keep feeling ignored and unhappy.
After thinking about it for a long time, I finally decided that it was time to let go.
My hands felt nervous as I typed the message. I read it several times before finally sending it.
“I think we should break up. I've really tried to make this work, but I don't think it's working anymore. I still care about you, but I think this is what I need to do.”
After I sent it, I just stared at my phone.
For a moment, everything felt quiet.
I felt sad. I felt guilty. I felt relieved. I even wondered if I had made the wrong decision. My mind kept going back and forth, remembering the good times and forgetting, for a moment, all the reasons I had made my decision.
I missed him, even though I knew I couldn't go back.
The days after the breakup weren't easy. Sometimes I wanted to text him just because I was used to talking to him. Sometimes I would see something funny and instinctively think about sending it to him, only to remember that things were different now.
But little by little, I started accepting what had happened.
I realized that breaking up with someone doesn't always mean you stopped caring about them. Sometimes it means you finally understand that caring isn't enough to make a relationship work.
I had tried. I had been patient. I had given it a chance. And when it still didn't work, I chose to walk away.
My first breakup hurt, but it also taught me something important about myself. I learned that I deserve a relationship where both people communicate, care, and make an effort. I learned that it's okay to let go of something that isn't working, even when your heart doesn't completely want to.
Peculiar will always be part of one chapter of my life. I will remember the good moments, the laughter, and even the difficult parts.
But that chapter ended.
And for the first time, I understood that sometimes turning the page isn't about forgetting someone.
It's about choosing yourself and being brave enough to start a new chapter.
