I Fell Down A Wishing Well

I fell down a wishing well
Swishing past bricks
And landed on soft mossy sticks, head first,
Where I found a dead fish for company.
Musty smells from somewhere under
Pulled my senses clear asunder.
I was dazed and amazed
The fish just lazed.
I sat there, reflecting
On my vain wish for a wife
That never came to life.
Being content with where I fell
In my own little wishing well.
When lusty help-shouts
Turned to hoarse whispers
And darkness fell on man and fish
I swear the stars were laughing at us
As they moved across their heavenly disk.
