I’ve been searching both far and wide,

For a superpower that seems to hide.

But just one power is too simplistic,

I have lots of them ’cause I’m autistic.

-

Is it autism that, with such splendour,

Makes me speak with no agenda?

I say what I see and I mean what I say,

Because I see the world in a different way.

-

Life to me is black or white,

It’s definitely wrong or it’s definitely right.

So I thank my stars that I’m morally good,

And know with kindness, if I can, I should.

-

My emotional range is truly immense,

So my feelings hurt, they’re that intense.

But this also means that my heart overflows,

With a love more pure than anyone knows.

-

To bring comfort when such emotion lingers

I twitch my toes or scratch my fingers,

Then meltdowns come when my mind is raw,

What you feel once, I feel ten times more.

-

I can meet your eyes, but sometimes stare,

To see inside and to meet who’s there.

Though my gaze seems to reach the beyond,

Surely that serves to strengthen our bond?

-

Meeting your eyes is a way I mask,

To appear normal in every task.

I hide my discomforts deep within,

It’s another world, should you see through skin.

-

Now, I have my talents and things I adore,

Like drawing and writing and nature and more.

But these don’t necessarily set me apart,

Each of our minds is its own work of art.

-

I’m hypersensitive and strangely in touch,

With others’ emotions, perhaps too much.

Yes, I have empathy, I understand,

The cards you have before showing your hand.

-

It’s a blessing and a curse to have this mind,

Naturally tuned but socially blind,

Physically able but mentally scarred,

Yet totally innocent when caught off guard.

-

I’ve been misunderstood for all of my days,

For unique behaviour and extraordinary ways.

But when you look at the picture whole,

You’ll see inside there’s a beautiful soul.

-

Is it me or autism that makes me stand out,

In parts of life some may not know about?

The decision is made, I have come to see,

That it’s both together - it’s autistic me.
